The Story Behind
the Name Utla
The name Utla honors the origins of solfège.
In the eleventh century — nearly a thousand years ago — the Italian monk Guido d’Arezzo gave names to six notes, so that choirs could learn and sing them correctly.
Ut · Re · Mi · Fa · Sol · La
In time, Si was added after La, and Ut gave way to Do, forming the do-re-mi we know today. Yet in France, the C clef is still called the clé d’ut — the name ut has never disappeared.
Utla joins the first of Guido’s notes with the last: Ut and La.
